Editing your Extrusion

 

This will of course be many times that you wish to edit your Extrusion after you have created it- either to edit the Profile, Path or both. Editing Extrusions is very easy. Just select the extrusion in question and then take a look at the Options Bar….

You will see that you have immediate access to the Path Length (that is, as long as you have used absolute values, rather than Parameters).

 

You can also hit the Edit button to take you back to the “Profile-editing” screen.

 

If you have simply drawn your profile using lines, arcs, etc; you can dynamically edit the extrusion profile by dragging on the grips once the extrusion is selected…..

OK, let’s put it all together….. 

Now we’ve gone through the theory let’s get stuck in and create a basic extrusion…

 

Start Revit, and select File>New>Family….

For the purposes of our exercise, select Metric Generic Model as the Template for our Family…

OK, so now we’re in the Family Editor, let’s get started on our Extrusion. Go ahead and select Solid Form>Solid Extrusion from the Design Bar on the left of the screen…

This will throw you straight into Sketch Mode, so that you can sketch out the profile of the extrusion. Go ahead and have some fun- add a couple on “inner closed loops” to form voids in your extrusion. Here’s my effort….

Now all we need to do now is adjust the path length. Let’s increase the path length to 500. Type this into the “Depth” control on the Option Bar…

So now we’ve drawn a Profile and set the length of the path, we can tell Revit to go ahead and create the Extrusion. Go ahead and hit “Finish Sketch” on the Design Bar…

Switch to a 3D View and check out your Extrusion in all it’s glory!

If you’re feeling adventurous go back and edit your extrusion- try changing the Profile shape, path length or even changing the material of the extrusion itself….
