I’m going to add a Reference plane in Plan, so that I can set out a datum for the frame, door panels, etc. The Reference Plane I’ve created is the second one down. I’ve added a dimension between the Reference Plane which represents the face of the wall; and my new Ref Plane. This will ensure that my Reference Plane is always constrained to 70mm away from the face of the wall….

I now use the Sweep tool to make my outer frame….

I then use Reference Lines to mark out a template for my door. I can then trace over this template to create an Extrusion, which will form the door itself….

I then do the same to form the make-up of the side screen….

Here’s the family so far…..

(It’s a little confusing as the Reference Lines are still in place)

Now I use the Extrusion tool again to form the beading around the glass panels. I can do all this in one hit….

And finally I’ll add some panes of glass. Yes you’ve guessed it- the Extrusion Tool again! As I’ve pointed out in other articles- 95% of your modelling will be done with either the Extrusion or Sweep Tools. In forming the glass panels I have to remember to change the material for this Extrusion to Glass- so that we can see through it in our model!

And that’s about it. Here’s the final 3D form….

The only thing left to do now is to add Symbolic Lines to each Elevation and Plan View in order to represent Door Swings, etc.

This was a very quick, brief overview of the process of creating custom doors- but hopefully you can see that there is not as much to the procedure as you may think. Granted, this is a very simple example- but most (Parameters aside) of the fundamental concepts are still there.
