I'm sure there are other methods of producing the desired outcome, but the process I adopted was to use the Family Editor and the Solid Blend Tool. The roof they were trying to produce (I think!) is shown in the image below... 
As stated above, I used the Solid Blend Tool to produce one of the facets of the roof, and then a simple use of the Mirror command to produce the rest.
Using the Solid Blend tool I first defined the Base of the solid... 
And then went onto sketch the Top of the solid...  Editing Blend Properties allowed me to set the distance between the Top and Base- ie the length of the Shell segment.  Selecting Finish Sketch forms our shell segment.... 
And then we just use the Mirror command and mirror along the edge of the shell to repeat the desired number of facets.... 
If you wish to remove the faceted effect at the edges, you can use Void Form>Solid Extrusion to remove a curved void- which has the effect of curving the end of the roof form. You can see where I have applied this to the narrow end of the shell roof...
