Welcome to the third part in a series of 5 articles on Revit’s Massing Editor and Building Maker. In this article we look at adding wall elements to our office block model that we developed in the proceeding articles. If you haven’t read the previous articles in this series, you will really need to read and work through Part 1 and Part 2, in order to have a model that we can take forward in this tutorial. If you are only seeing the floor elements and not the mass elements you need to turn on the Show Mass button at the top of the screen OK. So we have some mass elements that represent the body of the office block. We added some levels to define the floor and roof levels that we want. We then created Floor Area Faces that were then used to host Floor Elements. The Element types that we can add to our basic Mass Instances are: Wall Floor Curtain System Roof The controls for adding these systems are located on the Massing menu on the Design Bar. Adding Wall elements is a much simpler process than adding Floor elements. If you remember, to add Floor Elements we first had to add Floor Area Faces and THEN add the Floor Elements to those. With Walls, you can just go right ahead and add them directly to the individual faces of the mass instances. This will ensure that when we add the Wall Elements, the interior face of the Wall Element is placed onto the plane of the faces we select. Ie We want the faces of our Mass Instances to represent the interior walls of the office block- and consequently we want each wall element to be on the ‘outside’ of these faces. Now you have chosen the type of wall you wish to add and chosen how the wall element will relate to the faces we choose, move your cursor over the main body of the office block and notice how the various faces of the mass instances are highlighted. Go ahead and select the large face (nearest the screen) of the main body of the office block. Great! We’ve added a wall to the side of our office block. Once you added the walls your model should look something like this….
